Fit is the most important variable in how clothing looks. Here's how to read it before you buy.
Fit is responsible for approximately 80% of how a garment looks. A well-fitted cheap tee looks better than a badly fitted expensive one. Understanding what good fit looks like — and how to identify it from a size chart before you buy — means you stop getting it wrong in either direction.
The four dimensions of t-shirt fit
Shoulder seam placement
This is the most visible indicator of whether a t-shirt fits. The seam that connects the sleeve to the body should sit at the edge of your shoulder — right at the shoulder bone. If it's hanging down your arm, the shirt is too big. If it's pulling toward your neck, too small. Shoulder seam placement is also the hardest dimension to fix with tailoring, which makes it the most important to get right before buying.
Chest and body width
The body of the shirt should skim your chest and torso without pulling across the chest or bagging around the midsection. In a regular/fitted cut, you should be able to pinch about 2–3 cm of excess fabric on either side.
Length
The hem should fall at or just below your natural waistline — specifically, it should cover your waistband when you stand naturally, but not hang so long that it approaches mid-thigh.
Sleeve length
For a short-sleeve tee, the sleeve hem should fall roughly at mid-bicep — below the shoulder muscle but above the elbow.
Reading size charts for Indian brands
Indian sizing is not standardised across brands. An M at Bewakoof is not an M at Uniqlo is not an M at CaretGoods. Always check the size chart for chest width and length in centimetres, not just the S/M/L label.
Buying online without trying first
